Petal Modeste is currently the Assistant Dean and Dean of Career Services at Columbia Law School.  In this position, she oversees the professional development curriculum and career services for private sector career focused JDs, LLMs and alumni. Petal has extensive experience working as a lawyer and an executive at leading international law firms.  She began her legal career as an associate in the Finance Group at Shearman & Sterling, LLP where she represented lenders, borrowers and underwriters in sophisticated financing transactions. Prior to joining Columbia Law School, she served as Senior Director and Strategic Advisor for Legal Recruiting at Weil, Gotshal & Manges, LLP.

Petal is an active member of the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar, the National Association of Legal Placement and several similar organizations. She is often the featured speaker at legal industry conferences and similar fora.  Petal serves on the boards of Sanctuary for Families and Chelsea Day School. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Secondary Education, cum laude, from Andrews University, her Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Howard University School of Law and her MBA from Columbia Business School.  She is married with one daughter and she and her family split their time each year among Belgium, the Caribbean and NYC.
