Paul Murphy is a partner with King & Spalding's Special Matters and Governmental Investigations Group. His practice focuses on white collar criminal defense, internal corporate investigations, complex civil litigation, and corporate compliance and governance matters.

Mr. Murphy returned to the firm in September 2004 after seven years of public service with the United States Department of Justice. Most recently, he served as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia under appointments by the Attorney General and later by the United States District Court. From October 2001 to January 2004, he served as Associate Deputy Attorney General and as Chief of Staff to the Deputy Attorney General. In these capacities, Mr. Murphy was responsible for overseeing the Department's criminal and civil health care fraud enforcement efforts and was the principal policy liaison to the Department of Health and Human Services. He also was responsible for overseeing various Justice Department components, including the United States Marshals Service and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Mr. Murphy is also an experienced federal prosecutor. From July 1997 to October 2001, he worked as an Assistant United States Attomey in the Southem Disuict of Georgia and developed substantial grand jury and trial experience. While he prosecuted a wide range of federal offenses, Mr. Murphy focused heavily on health care fraud and other government program fraud and served as the office's health care fraud coordinator. During this time, he handled one of the Department's first cases involving managed care fraud. In 2000, the Department presented Mr. Murphy with the Director's Award for Superior Performance as an Assistant United States Attorney for his trial work in successfully prosecuting a large-scale alien smuggling operation.

From 1988 to 1997, Mr, Murphy was a member of the firm's litigation practice. He handled a wide range of civil and criminal matters and counseled clients on corporate compliance issues.
