Nick Helmer Jr.

Friedman Properties, Ltd.
General Counsel
Chicago, IL, USA

Nick Helmer Jr. is General Counsel for Friedman Properties, Ltd.  Since 2007 Mr. Helmer has been integrally involved in the day-to-day operations of all the various Friedman affiliated companies and his work focuses on commercial finance, construction, brokerage, property management, leasing, labor, HR and government relations.  The Friedman portfolio includes more than fifty properties and over 400 commercial tenants.  During the past five years, Helmer helped Friedman beat the commercial real estate downtrend and managed the company’s expansion with more than $500 million dollars in new construction development between 2008 and 2012 including five new hotels, a joint venture for a 470 unit apartment building and the completion of the country’s first green parking garage.

Helmer values the dynamic entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to community that drives Friedman's corporate culture.  Since 2012 Mr. Helmer has represented a Friedman affiliate which opened the first retail 3D printing store in the Midwest and expanded his practice to include commercial contracts in Korea, Germany and the UK.  As the company's resident gardener, gourmet chef and yogi, Helmer is an experienced connoisseur of Friedman’s highly regarded culinary community (which includes buildings that are home to 32 restaurants including 7 of the top 10 in Chicago).

Prior to joining Friedman, Helmer was General Counsel to Inland Great Lakes, LLC (previously one of The Inland Real Estate Group of Companies, Inc.).  From 1996-2002 Helmer was a real estate attorney at the legacy firm of DLA LLP and is proud to have been a member of the Real Estate Practice Group when it was named the “#1 Real Estate Practice” in the United States in 1999.

In 2011, 2013 and again in 2014, Helmer was named a First Chair Award Recipient as a Top General Counsel.  This award is an annual selection of in-house counsel who has, through their hard work and innovation, made significant contributions to the legal community.

Helmer earned a B.S. from Indiana University and a J.D. from The John Marshall School of Law.
