Net Neutrality Swings Back to the Future [01:05:48]

Now that the dust has settled, what’s expected next following the Federal Communications Commission’s decision to reverse the classification of broadband internet access service as a common carrier service and to roll back most of the Open Internet rules?  Consumer advocates, Internet Service Providers, content providers, and other internet and communications companies are assessing the potential outcomes from this proceeding – including further litigation.  Businesses and regulators in other countries continue to monitor these developments, including the short-term and long-term fall-out.

Hogan Lovells LLP partners Michele C. Farquhar (a former FCC Wireless Telecommunications Bureau Chief) and Alexander (Alexi) Maltas, both from Washington, D.C. and Winston Maxwell from Paris, France discuss the proceeding and its implications for the internet ecosystem in the U.S. and abroad.  They will discuss:

  • The FCC’s December 14 decision
  • The legal implications of reclassifying broadband internet access service
  • Planned and likely challenges
  • The possibility of Congressional action
  • The practical impact, including on “paid prioritization” arrangements, interconnection, and the consumer experience
  • The global impact of the decision, and net neutrality developments abroad
