Michael S. Schachter is a partner with Willkie Farr & Gallagher llp and chair of its white collar defense group.  His practice focuses on the representation of public companies, investment advisers, and their executives in white collar and securities enforcement matters, internal investigations, and commercial litigation.  Chambers USA  (2015) ranks Michael among the leading individuals specializing in Litigation: White-Collar Crime & Government Investigations.  He has also been consecutively recognized by Ethisphere Magazine as one of the “Attorneys Who Matter” (2010-2015) in the area of securities.  Michael has represented clients in numerous high profile matters, including the defense of SAC Capital and Steven A. Cohen in proceedings relating to claims of insider trading, the general counsel of Hollinger International in a four-month jury trial in the case of U.S. v. Conrad Black, and the recent defense of a Rabobank trader facing LIBOR manipulation charges.  Prior to joining Willkie, Mr. Schachter served as an AUSA in the Southern District of New York, where he was a member of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force.  As a prosecutor, Mr. Schachter conducted the investigation and successful prosecution of Martha Stewart and her broker, Peter Bacanovic.  He was also responsible for the prosecution of Samuel Waksal, the CEO of ImClone Systems.
