Michael is a partner in the Chicago office of Reed Smith LLP.  He concentrates his practice in the defense of class action privacy claims and has tried jury and bench trials in both state and federal courts. For more than 20 years, Michael has successfully defended against asserted class claims brought under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), and its attendant threat of statutory damages, and other claims based on the disclosure and use of consumer information.

Michael has represented a wide array of employers and other users of data involving various types of sensitive consumer information, such as credit reports, criminal record information, eviction and other public record information, as well as medical information. He has also represented an array of data furnishers, including credit bureaus, employment screening companies and insurance support organizations.

Michael’s practice also includes counseling clients regarding compliance with a wide spectrum of state and federal laws governing the use and disclosure of consumer financial, health and other information and related regulations (such as the FCRA, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and state laws governing criminal record and financial information.
