Michael Deer is an experienced privacy attorney focusing on consumer privacy in the retail sector. An IT-person-turned-lawyer, Michael is the former Director of Information Security at Nuveen Investments and former United Air Lines Information Security subject matter expert responsible for creating United's Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance program.

Mr. Deer has received Information Security training at the SANS Institute and has significant hands-on experience and deep knowledge of network security technologies, IT forensic examinations and Information Systems attack and penetration techniques and defenses.  As the Director of Privacy at Sears Holdings, Michael is the senior in-house legal counsel responsible for all areas of consumer and employee privacy, providing legal advice on subject matters ranging from retail operations and marketing, HIPAA compliant pharmacy operations, Financial Services and Credit operations covered under Graham Leach Bliley as well as current regulatory focal points such as online behavioral advertising and mobile marketing. A strong advocate for business-friendly consumer focused legislation, Mike also has enjoyed a hands-on role in shaping the future of privacy law as an active participant in the Retail Industry Leaders Association - Privacy Leaders Council, National Retail Federation and the California Retail Association's Privacy Working Group.

Michael received is Juris Doctor Degree from Chicago Kent College of Law and holds both an MBA and BS degree in Computer Science from DePaul University in Chicago.
