Michael Best is the Counselor to Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. Before his appointment as Counselor, Best spent eight years as General Counsel of the New York City Department of Education. Previously, he served as General Counsel and Director of Legal Affairs at the New York City Host Committee 2004, the not-for-profit corporation that helped the City host the 2004 Republican National Convention. For the first two years of Mayor Bloomberg's administration, Best was Deputy Counsel to the Mayor, and he has also served as the Director of the Mayor's Office of Contracts and City Chief Procurement Officer and as General Counsel in the Office of the Criminal Justice Coordinator. Best began his career as a law clerk to Judge Thomas P. Griesa of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and then was a prosecutor at the New York County District Attorney's Office. He received his J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School and his B.A., cum laude, from Williams College. He was also a New York City Urban Fellow. Best has served as a Wasserstein Public Interest Fellow at Harvard Law School, and in 2010 the Corporation Counsel of the City of New York awarded him the Dorothy Marie Miner Award for Outstanding Service as Counsel to an Agency.
