Overview

At this year’s Mental Health Issues & the New York State Courts 2019 a multi-disciplinary faculty will provide attorneys with a deeper understanding of substance abuse disorders within the context of the criminal justice system.

What You Will Learn

An interdisciplinary panel of lawyers, judges, social workers, and clinicians will examine what lawyers should understand about:

  • The systemic challenges in the criminal justice and health systems for clients and the wide range of substance use and misuse issues
  • Principles of effective drug treatment for the criminal justice population and how these principles impact decisions about whether to prosecute and whether/how to advocate for or permit a community based case disposition
  • The role of, and challenges for, drug treatment courts
  • Reconciling drug treatment and criminal justice policies and practices
