Melissa Godwin is a senior associate in Shearman & Sterling LLP's Litigation Group. Her practice involves a variety of complex commercial litigation on behalf of U.S. and foreign corporate clients and financial institutions in both state and federal courts. Ms. Godwin also has an active pro bono practice. She currently represents plaintiffs in Butler v. Suffolk County, et. al, E.D.N.Y. Index No. 11-cv-02602 (JS), a § 1983 class action lawsuit challenging inhumane conditions at the Suffolk County Correctional Facilities, and in 2011 received the Legal Aid Society's Pro Bono Publico Award for her role in overturning a murder conviction based on the recantation of the sole eyewitness's identification testimony in People v. Morillo, 2011 WL 7631523 (Supreme Ct. Bronx Co. Oct. 6, 2011). Ms. Godwin obtained her Bachelor of Laws, with Honors, from the University of Adelaide in 2005.
