Mavis K. Fowler-Williams

Intellectual Property and Technology Law in the 21st Century

Mavis Fowler-Williams is enjoying a thrilling journey through the fields of Intellectual Property Law and Information Technology Law. She began her travels in IP law as an associate for the patent boutique law firm of Cooper and Dunham. Shortly thereafter, she became a registered patent attorney while working for Johnson & Johnson. 

Her next stops along the way included starting her own law firm specializing in providing a full array of intellectual property protection for entertainment companies. In addition to prosecuting patent applications for inventors, she was actively involved in the patent licensing of a film editing process for one of her corporate clients, as well as managing the trademark portfolios of companies in the clothing, dance and travel media industries. While working in her own practice, she became General Counsel for Metropolis Pictures, the independent production company that made and distributed the 35 MM film Murder Magic. 

She then became a partner in the New York Office of Anderson Kill. As an in-house attorney working for such corporations as Toys "R" Us, Nick at Nite and TV Land and most recently, CBS News, she has handled a variety of trademark, copyright and information technology matters.  Mavis is a transactional expert who has drafted, negotiated, revised and reviewed thousands of agreements. As the principal of Intellectual Property and Technology Law in the 21st Century she counsels private clients. She has worked for a number of financial institutions and enjoys collaborating with other lawyers to train their personnel regarding intellectual property.

 Throughout her career, Mavis has frequently lectured on copyright and trademark law as well as other areas of the law for PLI, the NYC Bar, the American Bar Association, the NY County Lawyers Association, the Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyers Association, Practicing Attorneys for Law Students Program and the National Bar Association.  She has also taught at New York University and Columbia Law School.

 She is the author of numerous legal books and articles, i.e. on Copyright Law and Patent Law as well as articles on copyright, trademark and entertainment law. She is currently working on a book about the Copyright Cultural Revolution. She has also appeared on CNN, Court TV and radio.

Mavis is a graduate of the Columbia University School of Law, the Columbia University School of Engineering and Applied Science and The Bronx High School of Science.  She was the Chair of the Trademark Committee of the NYC bar. Mavis is also a member of Women in Digital Media, Corporate Counsel Women of Color and the Alumnae of Columbia Law School.

She has also enjoyed judging for the Columbia University Moot Court Program, the Saul Lefkowitz National Moot Court Competition and the Regional ABA Negotiation Competition.

In her spare time, Mavis enjoys spending time with her husband and two children as well as traveling, snowboarding and playing tennis.
