Mark W. Russell is a Special Counsel at Duane Morris LLP and practices in the area of intellectual property law with a focus on patent prosecution and strategic counseling in the chemical areas, specializing in the pharmaceutical/animal health industries.

Mr. Russell has over 30 years of experience working in the intellectual property area in government, private, and corporate settings. Mr. Russell began his career as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, examining in the organic chemistry area.  More recently, has held the position as Legal Director, Patents for Schering-Plough Corporation and Merck &Co., Inc., where his responsibilities included drafting patent applications and prosecuting them worldwide, developing patent portfolios and conducting freedom-to-operate analyses for drug molecules, and performing due diligences on potential acquisitions and in-licensing drug candidates. 

Mr. Russell is a 1994 graduate of American University Washington College of Law.  He also received a M.S. in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy for the University of Connecticut and a B.S. Chemistry from Fordham University.  

Mr. Russell is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and in the District of Columbia as well as before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  He is also a member of the NYIPLA and the NJIPLA as well as the American Chemical Society.
