Maria A. Maras is an intellectual property litigation partner in the Chicago office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP.  Maria focuses on litigation in the areas of patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret and false advertising, as well as litigation-related counseling.  She has represented clients in federal courts throughout the United States on matters involving a diverse range of technologies, including smartphones, smartphone cases, printers, photo software, cameras and hazardous waste treatment.  Her experience encompasses all aspects of litigation, such as discovery (including electronic discovery), motion practice, and appeals.

Maria is a member of the Firm’s Diversity Committee and Gender Subcommittee, as well as the Women’s Leadership Initiative planning committee in the Chicago office.  She is also a member of the Leadership Council of the National Immigration Justice Center and the President of the Harvard Law Society of Illinois.  From 2010-2012, Maria served as a Chair of the Chicago Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Committee (Young Lawyers Section).

Maria speaks regularly on intellectual property issues.  Recently, she presented a seminar entitled "The Patent Exhaustion Doctrine: Bowman v. Monsanto Co. and Other Recent Developments" at Kirkland & Ellis LLP’s 20th Annual Technology & Law Seminar.  She also led a roundtable discussion for the ABA Litigation Section’s IP Litigation Committee entitled "To Seed or Not to Seed: A Primer on Patent Exhaustion and Implied Licenses.”

Maria was recognized in 2011 by Illinois Super Lawyers as a “Rising Star” in Intellectual Property Litigation.
