MARC V. RICHARDS

Marc V. Richards is a shareholder with the intellectual property law firm of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione in Chicago.  Mr. Richards has more than 20 years of experience handling all areas of intellectual property law, focusing primarily in patent law.  He has represented clients in patent litigation involving software patents and chemical processes.  He presently is Chair of his firm’s Patent Interference Practice Group.

Mr. Richards also counsels clients on all areas of intellectual property law and assists them in developing patent portfolios in software, business methods, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals and material science technologies.  He also has handled post-grant and interference proceedings for software patents and chemical process patents.

Mr. Richards is a member of the American and Chicago Bar Associations, the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), and the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), where he served in 2011-2012 as International Chair of the Q217 Committee studying the Harmonization of Patent Laws on Obviousness, and has been featured as a speaker on the subject at U.S. and foreign IP law conferences.  He served as Treasurer of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago (IPLAC) from 2011-2013.  He is also author of Patenting Inventions, Chapter 1 in the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education (IICLE) Intellectual Property Law Handbook (2013 ed.).

Mr. Richards has been recognized in the field of Intellectual Property Law since 2006 by the Leading Lawyers Network and an Illinois Super Lawyer since 2013.  Mr. Richards received his B.S. Chemical Engineering from Washington University at St. Louis, an M.B.A. with honors from the University of Chicago, and his J.D. cum laude from Loyola University of Chicago School of Law, where he served as an Editor of the Loyola Law Journal.
