Manny Alvarez

Affirm, Inc.
General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer
San Francisco, CA, USA

Manny Alvarez serves as General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer to Affirm, Inc., a San Francisco-based technology start-up providing online point-of-sale consumer financing solutions. He oversees the company’s day-to-day legal and compliance affairs, including negotiating and drafting commercial contracts, managing corporate governance, and advising the business units on marketing, IP protection, and regulatory compliance.

Before joining Affirm, Manny was a “Founders Club” member of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a federal agency created by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010. He was the lead attorney in CFPB v. Castle & Cooke Mortgage LLC, et al., the first enforcement action of the Mortgage Loan Originator Compensation Rule promulgated after the 2008-2010 foreclosure crisis. Manny is also an alumni of the Consumer Law Section of the California Attorney General’s Office, where he helped achieve a $6.5 million settlement against the former-COO and the former-CEO of Countrywide Financial Corporation for their roles in the company’s predatory mortgage lending practices.

Before joining the AG’s Office, Manny was an associate at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP in San Francisco, where he represented financial institutions in a variety of matters ranging from breach of contract to unfair competition claims, and was involved in a variety of special projects and appeals. In 2007, he traveled to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to assist a special master investigation of a settlement dispute in Roe v. White (U.S.D.C., N.D. Cal., Case No. C-03-4035-CRB), involving a class action by Mexican citizens for alleged violations of the Protection of Children Against Sexual Exploitation Act of 1977.

Manny is a former president of the San Francisco La Raza Lawyers Association and former Treasurer of the Barristers Club of the San Francisco Bar Association. Throughout his career, he has mentored diverse law students and younger lawyers.

Manny grew up in Oxnard, California, which—despite its quirky name—has the best strawberries, shrimp tacos, and year-round climate in the world. He earned his JD from UC Hastings College of the Law and holds a BA, cum laude, from Cornell University. He lives with his wife and son in Oakland where he dreams of watching the A’s beat the Tigers in a game seven of an AL division series.
