Lisa Koebrich is a Director in the Atlanta office of KPMG LLP's Forensic Advisory Services Practice. She has more than fourteen years of experience in advisory services, accounting management and financial analyses. Her experience has focused primarily on the Energy industry and litigation support.

Professional and Industry Experience

Through her efforts in the Forensic Practice, Lisa assists in providing a comprehensive range of investigation and litigation services across various industries. She assists organizations in investigating and assessing fraud, and provides litigation support through financial analysis, damage assessment, and transactional analysis. Engagement experience includes the following:

  • Internal investigation for one of the largest electric utilities in the United States.  Assisted the company in an investigation of multiple fraud allegations. This investigation required detailed knowledge of utility specific accounting and operations.  Performed detailed analyses on specific accounts, reviewed key documents, and interviewed key personnel.  Lisa presented findings to the Audit Committee, which may be used to defend the company before the Public Service Commission.
  • Participated as the Subject Matter Professional and managed an Internal Audit of the Settlement Department for a client in the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator market (a.k.a. MISO). Lisa conducted interviews, selected testing sample, and managed audit team throughout the engagement.  Upon reporting findings to management, the findings were accepted and acted upon by the company.
  • Managed a full-scope engagement in conjunction with the Audit practice for the audit of an Energy Marketing Company. As part of Forensic, services are offered to clients with certain levels of risk titled "Forensic in the Audit" or "FITA". Performed FITA services for an energy marketing company that recently emerged from bankruptcy. Lisa conducted SAS 99 interviews with key executives and personnel. Multiple analyses and document reviews were performed. Presented findings to audit team.
  • Assisted with a stock-option back-dating investigation of one of the largest electric utilities, U.S. based, international. Managed a large team of document reviewers as part of the investigation. Utilized Forensic Technology and worked with General Counsel to develop search terms and prioritize documents.
  • Conducted a fraud investigation for large financial services company that is a major credit card processor. Lisa conducted multiple interviews of key personnel, identified the appropriate foreign subsidiary personnel for interviews, and coordinated with the KPMG Australian Forensic Practice.  Various analyses were performed and assessments made as to the integrity of management and the tone at the top.  Multiple recommendations were made and subsequently implemented.
  • Conducted investigation in a post-acquisition accounts receivable class action lawsuit for a large specialty pharmaceutical company. Lisa's primary roles included working for the Defense and preparing the expert witness for deposition and trial.

Industry Experience

  • Managed Back-Office for wholesale energy trading company with over 5,000 MW of capacity, including two of the largest natural gas-fired plants in the United States.
  • Testified in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the largest Energy company bankruptcy in history.  In testifying, prepared extensively with inside and outside counsel for testifying.  Prepared plaintiff documentation and support for counsel.
  • Managed settlement of complex OTC and exchange traded contracts for three generation facilities: 450 MW 2x1 CC (Mission, TX), 2,200 MW 4-2x1 CC (Union, AK), and 2,200 MW 4-2x1 CC (Gila Bend, AZ).  This included contracts for all commodities and products including energy, capacity, natural gas, derivatives, NYMEX, and ancillary services.
  • Back-Office Lead on favorable mediated settlement agreement with Independent System Operator.  Provided scenario calculations for settlement.
  • Assisted with the design and implementation of a Daily P&L for commodity trading floor.
  • Responsible for daily position reporting and profit and loss analysis for power and gas trading desks.  Ensured proper reporting of all deals in financial statements according to GAAP.
  • Responsible for all settlement of deals and timely payment to/from counterparties for approximately $100 million annually.
  • Worked closely with Legal, Risk Management, Contracts, Credit, Scheduling, Real-time Desk, Day-ahead Desk, Asset Management, Origination, Confirmations, and General Accounting.
  • Managed all margin calls, incoming and outgoing, via exchanges and OTC.
  • Implemented the Back-Office suite of trading system and developed custom Back-Office reports.
  • Analyzed, reported, and communicated monthly, quarterly, and annual business results to senior management for gas, coal, and synthetic fuel businesses.  Prepared internal and external reports, including meeting SEC reporting requirements.  In doing so, implemented a standard financial reporting package. Prepared Q&A and support schedules for Quarterly Earnings Releases.
  • Ensured that all aspects of reporting and related documentation were in compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.  Managed Sarbanes-Oxley documentation and testing as it related to Back-Office.
  • Coordinated and orchestrated internal and external audits.
  • Other areas in which Lisa has varying degrees of exposure/expertise include, but are not limited to:  NYMEX, Index Swaps, Swing Swaps, Heat Rates, Heat Rate Capacity Contracts, Corporate Guarantee, ISDA, EEI, Day-ahead Market, Real-time Market, Houston Ship Channel, Henry Hub, Scheduling, Congestion, Bilateral Contracts, and Intercontinental Exchange.
