Leonard A. Gail has over two and a half decades of experience in civil and in criminal matters involving a wide range of trial, other litigation and counseling services.

As a Founding Partner of Massey & Gail and as a Partner with Bartlit Beck Herman Palenchar & Scott, he has led litigation teams on complex matters nationwide. As an Assistant United States Attorney, he directed investigations and trial teams including multi-million-dollar corporate fraud matters.  And, he began his career as an Associate at Kirkland & Ellis, where he worked for four years before helping form Bartlit Beck.  Lenny has also served as adjunct professor of law at the University of Chicago Law School.  In total, he has taken to trial, arbitrated or argued on appeal nearly two dozen substantial matters in tribunals across the country covering a wide array of legal areas.

From 2000 through its merger with JPMorgan Chase, Lenny served as Deputy General Counsel and Senior Vice President at Bank One.  He managed a wide array of practice groups, including litigation, bankruptcy, regulatory proceedings, real estate, and technology.  He also served as the Law, Compliance and Government Relations Department’s Chief Financial Officer, with a $100 million-plus budget.

In 2009, Lenny combined his substantial and varied litigation experience with his long- time friend Jonathan Massey’s appellate expertise to form Massey & Gail.  For the last six years, the small but growing firm has provided clients high-quality legal advice – from counseling to trial to Supreme Court litigation.  The firm now has offices in Chicago, Washington, D.C., Boston, and San Francisco.

Lenny graduated from Dartmouth College, A.B. magna cum laude in 1985, where he was National Debate Champion.  He graduated from Harvard Law School, J.D. cum laude in 1988, where he was Articles Editor of the Harvard Journal on Legislation. He then served as a law clerk to the Honorable James B. Moran, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, 1988-1989.  He lives in Chicago with his wife, Robin Steans.  They have three daughters – ages 21, 19, and 17.
