Lee E. Chastain

Freescale Semiconductor
Director, IP Licensing and Strategic Counseling
Austin, TX, USA

Lee Chastain is a 22 year veteran of the semiconductor industry, having worked at Texas Instruments, Motorola and, now, Freescale Semiconductor.  Lee is currently responsible for all IP matters at Freescale, other than patent prosecution issues, including IP monetization and IP litigation.   Freescale has a strong tradition of IP monetization, reaching back over four decades to the days when it was Motorola’s Semiconductor Products Sector. In his current role, Lee is responsible for negotiating patent licenses, both bilateral and unilateral, and patent sales agreements.  Freescale generated over $600 M in licensing and patent sales revenue during the period from 2009 to the present.

Prior to his current position, Mr. Chastain was a general business counselor for Freescale and its former parent, Motorola.  His responsibilities included the day to day legal activities of Freescale’s network processor group and its manufacturing operations.  Most visibly, Lee managed the legal affairs of the Apple-IBM-Motorola PowerPC processor alliance, the Motorola-Agere-Infineon StarCore alliance and separate process technology alliances with TSMC, STM-NXP and IBM.

Lee holds a JD from Columbia University and a BA in Physics and a BS in Nuclear Engineering from Northwestern University.  He is a registered Patent Attorney.
