Taken from the briefing Leadership for Lawyers recorded May, 2016 in New York.

Leadership training is growing rapidly for lawyers. In 2001 only one state in the Union provided CLE credit for leadership training. Today, over 30 states provide CLE credit for “leadership for lawyers courses” based on the recognition that lawyers are called upon to be leaders every day and need formal training in leadership just as much as they need formal training in civil procedure, taking an excellent deposition, and drafting real estate contracts. Lawyers who begin to study leadership theory and practice will gain a competitive advantage over their opposing counsel and other lawyers. Their clients will benefit from their lawyers being better leaders as they negotiate and litigate on their behalf.

This field – leadership development training for lawyers - was started by speeches given by Herb Rubenstein going back to his address to ACLEA in 2001 and his book Leadership for Lawyers published in 2005. A second edition of the book was published in 2008 by the American Bar Association, and now a third edition of the book is planned. Today, there are over a dozen books published on leadership for lawyers, all providing important information to help lawyers become better leaders in their firms, with their clients, in court, and in the nonprofits and other organizations where they sit on boards of directors.

The material covered in this course will also help lawyers become better leaders overall in their firms and in the profession.
