Laurie McFadden is a sole practitioner attorney whose practice is devoted to the representation of nonprofit, tax-exempt and mission-driven organizations. She offers advice and counsel on a broad range of legal matters including corporate formation and governance, application for exempt status, tax and regulatory filings, compliance, policies & procedures, charitable giving, and other legal issues common to nonprofits.

Ms. McFadden began her legal career at Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler, as an Associate Attorney in the Exempt Organizations Group. In 2000 she joined the Mann Legal Group, a boutique legal firm serving nonprofit organizations, where she represented a range of clients, including public charities, private foundations, private operating foundations, fraternal beneficiary societies and social welfare organizations. In 2004 Ms. McFadden worked as Assistant General Counsel for a term appointment at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, providing legal guidance on donor agreements, corporate sponsorship, tax matters, gift terms, copyright questions and issues pertaining to the Museum’s collections.

From 2004–2010 Ms. McFadden served in the General Counsel’s Office at Columbia University. As Associate General Counsel, she was the primary lawyer supporting the University’s Office of Development, while also advising various University constituencies on matters of compliance, governance, and the use of gift funds, and co-managing a University-wide Endowment Compliance and Administration Project that resulted in the implementation of an enhanced set of policies, procedures and training materials. . Ms. McFadden returned to Columbia in 2011 to assist in the review and analysis of the University’s endowment funds for purposes of the newly enacted New York law on the management of institutional funds (NYPMIFA).

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Ms. McFadden had a career in the arts. She was a Lecturer in the history of art, film and design at Cardiff College of Art in Wales, an Exhibitions Officer for the Welsh Arts Council, an Archivist for the Paul Mellon Center in London, and the Advertising Art Director for Art & Auction Magazine in New York.

Ms. McFadden received her B.A. from the University of Michigan, graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa; her M.A. from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London, U.K.; and her J.D. from New York University School of Law, graduating magna cum laude and Order of the Coif. She is a member of the Exempt Organizations Committee of the American Bar Association, and a member of the New York State and Sullivan County Bar Associations.
