Community Education and Volunteer Program Manager, La Casa de las Madres

The mission of La Casa de las Madres is to respond to calls for help from domestic violence victims, of all ages, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  We give survivors the tools to transform their lives.  We seek to prevent future violence by educating the community and redefining public perceptions about domestic violence.

Laia Gasa-Pons is a clinical and social psychologist, trained in systems’ approach, constructivism, Gestalt and somatic therapy.  Laia is originally from Barcelona and she specialized in gender violence during her studies.  For the past six years she has worked with teens, children, and adults as a therapist, academic counselor, teacher-researcher, trainer, and workshop leader in the social and non-profit sector, in Barcelona, Los Angeles and San Francisco.  She has taught courses related to Psychology in different programs at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the University of California, Los Angeles.  She has also been invited to talk about domestic violence representing La Casa de las Madres at service provider organizations, media, schools and colleges within the whole the Bay Area.  Her thesis on “Gender Violence in the Mass Media” was awarded with a scholarship by the Catalan government.

Other work and volunteer experience will include work with conflict mediation, homelessness, work within the Spanish penitentiary system and work with depressed and cognitive degenerative patients.

Laia believes in a preventative holistic approach of health which foundation relies on mental care, organic care and social care (healthy relationships).  Her professional career is intends to fit these three needs within an individual and community scope.  

She moved to San Francisco on 2013 to continue serving the community and volunteered for La Casa de las Madres for a year before recently becoming the Community Education & Volunteer Program Manager.
