Kathy Holub

Founder, Holub Consulting, Lecturer at Law, Columbia and Harvard Law Schools
New York, NY, USA

Kathy Holub is a teacher, trainer, and coach in dispute resolution skills.  Her passion is helping people become more effective and confident negotiators.  Her approach is based on the integrative bargaining method first developed at the Harvard Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School.  The key idea is that good negotiation is not a wrestling match, but a problem-solving process aimed at getting the best possible deal for both sides.

Kathy has taught the Negotiation Workshops at Columbia Law School and Harvard Law School for many years.  In her consulting practice, she works with executives and professionals in a wide range of fields, including law, finance, medicine, and communications.  Her group trainings are highly interactive, packed with exercises and simulations.  Her work with individuals – typically professionals, entrepreneurs, and owners of small businesses -- focuses on coaching clients through key negotiations while building skills for the future.

In a recent expansion of her practice, Kathy also works with individuals and families dealing with inheritance issues.  She knows from personal experience that negotiations about inheritance can be uniquely challenging even for the closest of families.  Her work focuses on helping families make decisions and solve problems while supporting the relationships that will endure long after the property issues are settled.

A former practicing lawyer, Kathy has presented programs on “Women and Negotiation” for private clients and at the New York City Bar Association.  She has also provided editorial consulting on two major books in the negotiation field.

Before entering the legal profession, Kathy was a widely published journalist.  She was a longtime staff writer at the San Jose Mercury News, where she shared a Pulitzer Prize in General News Reporting.  Her work has appeared in many other publications, including The New York Times and TIME.  She also spent a year as a Knight Fellow in Journalism at Stanford University.

Kathy received her undergraduate degree from Harvard University and her law degree from Yale Law School.  She clerked for the Hon. Sonia Sotomayor on the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of New York.  She practiced law for two years at a New York firm before moving into teaching and consulting.
