Karl J. Krapek retired as President and Chief Operating Officer of United Technologies Corporation in January 2002. Mr. Krapek had  een with UTC for twenty years serving in various management positions. He first served UTC, beginning in 1982, as Vice President of Operations for the Otis Elevator Company and became its President in 1989. He was Chairman, President and CEO of Carrier Corporation in 1990 and became President and CEO of Pratt & Whitney in 1992. He was named Executive Vice President and a Director of UTC in 1997. Prior to joining UTC, he was Manager of Car Assembly Operations for the Pontiac Motor car Division of General Motors Corporation and Project Manager of the Fiero Sports Car.
Mr. Krapek, in 2002, became a cofounder of The Keystone Companies, concentrating on residential and commercial real estate development.

Mr. Krapek has been an active volunteer in the Hartford area. He has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Capitol Region Growth Council and Chairman of the MetroHartford Millennium Management Group. Mr. Krapek is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Connecticut State University System. He is a member of the Board of Directors of St. Francis Care, Inc. for which he chairs the Board’s Strategic Planning Committee. He chaired the Hartford Youth Scholars Foundation from 2005-2010. He was a member of the Director’s Advancement Board of the Yale Cancer Center for seven years, a member of the Bushnell Center of the Performing Arts Board of Overseas, and was past Chairman and a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council of the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University. Mr. Krapek also served as Chairman of the Board of the Aerospace Industries Association in 2000-2001. In 1999, he was General Campaign Chairman of the United Way and Combined Health Appeal Community Campaign for Hartford which raised $25.4 million, the largest annual fund-raising effort in the state that year. He was Honorary Chairman of the Canon Greater Hartford Open in 1998 and Chaired its 50th Anniversary in 2001. He was National Co-chair of the American Architectural Foundation capital campaign to restore the Octagon in Washington, D.C. Mr. Krapek was formerly a director of Alcatel-Lucent and Delta Airlines, Inc. He is currently a director of The Connecticut Bank and Trust Company, Northrup Grumman Corporation, Prudential Financial, Inc. and Visteon Corporation. Mr. Krapek was the recipient of the Outstanding Achievement award from the General Motors Institute in 1992 and in 2003 received its Distinguished Alumnus Achievement Award. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award From Purdue University in 1990 and was a Krannert Scholar at Purdue. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in management from Purdue in 1998. In 1998, he received the Downtown Council’s Leadership Award. He is also the recipient of The Hartford Courant’s 1999 Regional Leadership Award. In 2000, Mr. Krapek was a recipient of the Business Friend of Singapore award. In April 2002, Community Health Charities of Connecticut recognized Mr. Krapek with the group’s annual distinguished service award. This award will be permanently named for Mr. Krapek. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi and Beta Gamma Sigma. He is a Big Brother in the Big Brother/Big Sisters Program.

Mr. Krapek attended Osage Community High School in Osage, Iowa, General Motors Institute, now Kettering University (B.S. industrial engineering) and Purdue University (M.S. industrial administration).
