Karen M. Sandler is Executive Director of the Software Freedom Conservancy, the nonprofit home of dozens of essential free software projects. She is known for her advocacy for free and open source software, particularly in relation to the software on medical devices.

She co-organizes Outreachy an internship program for women and other underrepresented groups in technology and is a lawyer, providing pro bono legal counsel to the FSF, GNOME and QuestionCopyright.Org. Prior to her work in software freedom, she was as an associate in the corporate departments of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP in New York and Clifford Chance in New York and London. Sandler received her law degree from Columbia Law School in 2000, where she was a James Kent Scholar and co-founder of the Columbia Science and Technology Law Review.
