University of Notre Dame, Office of Technology Transfer
Commercialization Specialist
South Bend, IN, USA

At the University of Notre Dame, I help faculty inventors at the University of Notre Dame protect their ideas, and turn them into companies. I joined Notre Dame’s Office of Technology Transfer (now the IDEA center) in July 2016. Prior to this role, in January 2011 I came to Notre Dame to create and become the Director of Notre Dame’s MS in Patent Law, and in 2014, the online Certificate in Patent Prosecution. The curriculum for both the MS in Patent Law and the Certificate in Patent Prosecution were based heavily on my own experiences in learning patent law on the job.

My background is in the life sciences. I earned a BS in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After earning my Ph.D. in Genetics at the University of Chicago, I spent three years working in the intellectual property group of a law firm, where I was a part of the biotechnology patent practice. My practice included work with all stages of the patent lifecycle for biotech clients, and included work on medical diagnostic tests, agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and industrial products. I performed patentability, due diligence, and freedom-to-operate analyses; and actively participated in the drafting and prosecution of both US and international patent applications. I joined the firm as a patent scientist; I eventually passed the patent bar and became a patent agent.

In the past, I have taught Patent Law I, Patent Law II, and Patent Practitioner Ethics in the MS in Patent Law; and Patent Prosecution and Patent Practitioner Ethics in the online Certificate in Patent Prosecution.
