Julia Court Ryan is Assistant General Counsel, Head of Trade Compliance at Varian Medical Systems. She joined Varian in August of 2016. Varian Medical Systems is the world's leading manufacturer of medical devices and software for treating cancer and other medical conditions with radiotherapy, radiosurgery, proton therapy, and brachytherapy. The business also supplies informatics software for managing comprehensive cancer clinics, radiotherapy centers and medical oncology practices. Varian is headquartered in Palo Alto, California. Ms. Ryan divides her time between Palo Alto and Washington, DC.

Ms. Ryan is Varian’s chief trade compliance attorney and leads the Company’s trade compliance function. She is responsible for all aspects of Varian’s compliance with U.S. and international import and export control laws and regulations. She is responsible for counseling the businesses on trade compliance matters, developing and maintaining policies and procedures, and for the oversight of the trade controls function of the Company.

Prior to joining Varian, Ms. Ryan was Senior Counsel at Raytheon Company from where she was responsible for the development and maintenance of corporate level export and import control policies and procedures and for providing legal advice to Raytheon businesses on export and import control related matters. Before joining Raytheon, Ms. Ryan was Of Counsel at Steptoe & Johnson. In that capacity, she concentrated her practice on export controls and anticorruption matters, ranging from compliance development, transactional counseling through enforcement.

Ms. Ryan holds a bachelor’s degree in violin performance from San Francisco State University and a doctorate of jurisprudence, awarded summa cum laude, from the American University, Washington College of Law.
