Joon H. Kim is the Deputy United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.  He was promoted to that position in July 2015 after serving as Chief of the Criminal Division from July 2013 to July 2014.  Prior to that, from April 2013 to July 2014, Mr. Kim served as the Chief Counsel to the U.S. Attorney. 

As the Deputy U.S. Attorney, Mr. Kim oversees and supervises the work of all of the approximately 220 Assistant U.S. Attorneys in the Office, both in the Criminal and Civil Divisions.  That work includes prosecutions of terrorism, securities and commodities fraud, cybercrime, public corruption, violent and organized crime, and financial and other white-collar offenses, as well as all the Office’s affirmative and defensive civil litigation and asset forfeiture work.

Before returning to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in 2013, Mr. Kim was a litigation and enforcement partner at the law firm of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP.  Mr. Kim’s practice at Cleary Gottlieb focused on white-collar criminal defense and regulatory enforcement, as well as commercial civil litigation and international arbitration.

From 2000 to 2006, Mr. Kim was an Assistant U.S. Attorney investigating and prosecuting a wide variety of crimes, including racketeering, murder, money laundering, securities fraud, firearms and narcotics offenses, tax evasion, and terrorism.  He spent his last four years of his first tour in the Office in the Organized Crime and Terrorism Unit, prosecuting mostly violent organized crime syndicates, including Asian gangs and the Mafia.   

Mr. Kim graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University in 1993 and graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1996.  After law school, he clerked for the Honorable Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum of the Southern District of New York until 1997.
