John Siegal, a partner in the BakerHostetler law firm, is an accomplished trial and appellate lawyer in federal and state courts in New York and across the nation. He advises, litigates and arbitrates primarily for financial services, media and real estate industry clients in private business disputes and matters involving public agencies and controversies.

Mr. Siegal has a nearly 30-year track record in trade secrets and noncompete cases.  He formerly co-chaired the national noncompete and trade secrets practice groups at BakerHostetler and earlier at Proskauer.  He has handled trade secrets cases under the laws of at least 16 states, in federal and state courts, AAA arbitrations and at FINRA.

In the financial services industry, Mr. Siegal has handled noncompete and raiding cases for a global investment bank, as well as for an array of investment and brokerage firms, insurance companies, and professional services providers.  His financial services industry work has also included extensive experience in partnership and fiduciary duty disputes, fraud cases, and employment litigation.  Mr. Siegal has won jury verdicts in employment discrimination cases, fiduciary duty litigation and a private equity dispute involving First Amendment retaliation issues.  As part of BakerHostetler's role as court-appointed counsel to the Securities Investor Protection Act Trustee for the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, Mr. Siegal served as lead attorney from 2009 to 2012 in Picard v. Madoff et al.

Mr. Siegal has published and presented extensively on noncompete and trade secrets legal issues, including in the National Law Journal, New York Law Journal, other trade publications, a law review and as chair of a previous PLI program on “Protecting Corporate IP Assets: Enforcing Restrictive Covenants in the Employment Context.” PLI, Program Chair, November, 2004

In addition to his track record in the private practice of law, Mr. Siegal’s extensive public affairs and government experience includes his current appointment by the Mayor as a member of the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board that hears civilian complaints of excessive force, abuse of authority, discourtesy or use of offensive language against members of the New York Police Department.

Mr. Siegal is a graduate of the New York University School of Law and of Columbia College at Columbia University.
