John A. Gresham is a Staff Attorney in the Brooklyn office of Disability Rights New York, where he specializes in matters affecting people with mental illnesses. DRNY is New York’s statewide, federally-authorized Protection and Advocacy organization, which assists people with all types of disabilities in a wide range of issues.

He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1971 and was first admitted to practice in Massachusetts the same year. He was a Staff Attorney with Legal Services for Cape Cod & Islands (now Legal Services for Southeastern Massachusetts) through 1977. From 1977 to 1981 he was a Staff Attorney with the Greater Upstate Law Project (now the Empire Justice Center) in Rochester, NY, where worked on several multi-issue county jail conditions cases. From 1981 through 1993 he was Associate Director of Prisoners’ Legal Services of New York. He devoted considerable time to matters involving guard brutality, inmates with HIV and mental illness, and the prison grievance system. He was a Staff Attorney, then Senior Litigation Counsel at New York Lawyers for the Public Interest from 1993 through 2009. At NYLPI he was co-counsel in Brad H. v. City of New York, the leading case on discharge planning for inmates with mental illness. From 2010 to 2012 he was Associate Professor of Law at Touro Law School on Long Island, where he established a clinical program serving veterans.
