Joan Stearns Johnsen is a Legal Skills Professor at the University of Florida Levin College of Law where she teaches arbitration and negotiation. Joan is also a commercial mediator and arbitrator and sits on the panels of the American Arbitration Association, CPR, and FINRA.  Joan is certified by the International Mediation Institute and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Joan began her career as an enforcement attorney with the CFTC in Washington, D.C.  and was corporate counsel for Smith Barney and the Commodity Exchange in New York. 

Joan is a frequent speaker and trainer having presented on various topics for the NASD/FINRA, PLI, ALI/ABA, The ABA, Westlaw, the Union International des Avocats, The New York Academy of Trial Attorneys, and for The Bar of the City of New York. Joan is on the faculty of the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution’s Advanced Mediation  and Arbitration Training  Joan has written numerous articles and including a law review article on Deal Mediation in the Windsor Review of Legal and Social Issues. 

Joan is Budget Officer of the ABA’s Section of Dispute Resolution and a member of its Executive Committee.  Joan also is co-chair of the Mediation Sub-committee of the ADR Committee of the ABA’s  Section of Litigation.
