Jennifer Friedman is the Director of the Immigration Practice at The Bronx Defenders, where she directs and has overseen the expansion of its immigration practice which currently consists of eighteen attorneys and five non-attorney advocates.  Those attorneys, civil legal advocates, and social workers provide plea consults to non-citizens with pending criminal cases, represent non-citizens in removal proceedings, and pursues applications for immigration status on behalf of Bronx Defenders clients.  She is also directs BXD’s work under the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project (NYIFUP), the first-ever universal representation project for detained non-citizens facing removal in New York City.  Since July 2014, through the generosity of the New York City Council, The Bronx Defenders is one of three legal service providers who take on representation of all financially-eligible noncitizens facing removal in the Varick Immigration Court.  Jennifer has trained public defenders, parents’ advocates, and immigration attorneys on the intersection of criminal and immigration law and the implications of the Supreme Court’s decision in Padilla v. Kentucky across the country. She is a member of the Advisory Board of the Defending Immigrant Partnership and has testified before the New York City Council regarding noncitizens in criminal detention.  Jennifer received her J.D. from New York University School of Law, where she was an Arthur Garfield Hays Civil Liberties Fellow.  While at NYU, Jennifer was a member of the Immigrant Rights Clinic and on the board of the Review of Law and Social Change. During law school, Jennifer interned at the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project and participated in the Immigrants’ Rights Clinic. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Smith College.
