Jay Freedman is a Principal in KPMG’s Financial Services Tax Practice, focusing on Alternative Investment and Capital Markets clients.  For over 20 years, Jay has focused on a broad array of tax issues, with an emphasis on issues related to the Alternative Investment and Banking industries including financial products and derivatives, cross border structuring and transactions, partnership tax and corporate tax.


 Professional and industry experience

Jay has over 20 years of experience working in the financial services industry. He has significant experience in both tax consulting and tax compliance and regularly advises on structuring as well as portfolio strategies.

Jay offers a unique perspective having served in several senior level in-house positions for major international investment managers, securities dealers and investment banks and is able to offer both buy-side and sell-side perspectives.

Prior to joining KPMG, Jay spent 5 years as Senior Vice President and Tax Director of Chilton Investment Company. Before joining Chilton in 2008, Jay spent 8 years at Bear Stearns where he was a Senior Managing Director and Global Head of Tax Advisory and Tax Research and Planning. Jay’s earlier roles include serving as in-house tax counsel with Prudential Securities and its parent company Prudential Insurance Company, and as a Tax Associate in the Securities and Banking group of another Big 4 accounting firm.


Memberships and speaking engagements

Jay is a member of the Board of Directors of the Wall Street Tax Association, as well as a past-President and past Chairman of their Federal Tax Committee. Jay is also a member of the Managed Funds Association Tax Committee and has participated in a number of industry group efforts through SIFMA and ISDA. Jay is a frequent speaker on topics that include alternative investments, financial products and other tax issues related to the financial services industry and is a co-author of the KPMG Derivatives Tax Handbook.
