Jane Y. Aoyama-Martin

Bronx Legal Services
Project Director
Bronx, NY, USA

JANE AOYAMA-MARTIN has dedicated much of her career to serving low-income, disenfranchised communities. As Project Director at Bronx Legal Services, she leads the largest provider of free civil legal services in the Bronx, one of the poorest urban counties in the United States.

Jane has been active in the anti-domestic violence movement throughout her professional life.  She is a founding and former Board member of the New York Asian Women’s Center, the first project on the East Coast to organize women on the problems of battering and sexual assault in the Asian communities. She has lectured and trained new attorneys, and for many years was a key instructor at the Intensive Trial Skills Training for Effective Representation of Battered Women sponsored by the NYS Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence.

Jane started her legal career serving the poor as a legal services fellowship attorney in rural upstate New York, followed by a position as a staff attorney at Bronx Legal Services for several years. She subsequently worked as a NYS Assistant Attorney General, solo practitioner, and senior associate in a private firm. After varied legal experiences, she found her way back to a poverty law practice, and for nearly 10 years headed the Legal Aid Society’s family law practice in the Bronx and Harlem, and co-supervised the Society’s city-wide Domestic Violence Project. After leaving the Legal Aid Society, Jane served for 9 years as the Executive Director of the Pace Women’s Justice Center at Pace Law School. Finally, after being away for over 30 years, Jane rejoined Bronx Legal Services in 2015 as Project Director.

In addition to numerous committees and bar memberships, Jane proudly serves on the Board of The Havens Relief Fund Society, a private operating foundation that helps individuals and families overcome crises. Jane graduated from UC Berkeley, School of Social Welfare, and UCLA School of Law.
