James Groton

James P. Groton is a retired partner of Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan LLP in Atlanta, where he formerly headed up the Construction and Dispute Prevention and Resolution practices of that firm.

He currently serves as an arbitrator and mediator of international and domestic construction disputes. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the College of Commercial Arbitrators, and is qualified as an arbitrator and dispute resolution neutral on the panels of a number of dispute resolution organizations, including the American Arbitration Association’s International Commercial Panel, Large Complex Case Panel, and Construction Arbitration Master Panel.

Jim is also a leading advocate of adapting construction industry dispute prevention and control principles and techniques to other industries and business relationships. He devotes a substantial amount of pro bono time to educating construction industry and business executives and organizations in the principles of proactive prevention of disputes. He is active in the work of the National Academy of Construction, Construction Industry Institute, the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (CPR), the International Association for Contract and Commercial Management (IACCM), and the ProActive Think Tank.

Jim is a former President of the American College of Construction Lawyers. He has received many awards for his construction and dispute prevention and resolution work, including the AAA’s Whitney North Seymour Sr. Arbitration Medal, the Engineering News-Record Medal of Excellence, Honorary Membership in the American Institute of Architects, and two CPR awards for innovation in dispute resolution.
