James Tancula is a litigation partner and previously served as a co-chair of the Firm's international arbitration practice. He is one of the Firm’s most-experience international arbitration practitioners. During his nearly 34 years of practice he has focused on complex commercial litigation matters. Mr. Tancula has represented clients engaged in domestic and international arbitrations and litigation dealing with oil and gas exploration and production, refineries, pipelines, electrical generating facilities, cogeneration plants, coal mines, phosphate mines, pulp and paper mills, steel mills, water tunnels, highways, sports stadiums and other infrastructure projects and with fuel and feedstock supply agreements. He has extensive experience representing clients in U.S. courts and in domestic and international arbitrations ad hoc and under the auspices of the AAA/ICDR, ICC, ICISD, and SIAC.

James also has a varied commercial and commercial litigation practice focusing on contractual  issues. He represents clients in concerns and disputes involving stock or asset transfer contracts, partnership agreements, limited partnership control issues, professional services contracts, franchise contracts, employment contracts, utility fuel contracts, and pipeline agreements. James defends clients involved in civil RICO, bank fraud and other fraud cases.  Jim also has represented clients in product liability cases ranging from petrochemicals to heavy equipment.

James began his practice with Mayer Brown in the firm's Chicago office in 1987. He subsequently relocated to Mayer Brown's offices in Houston (1991-2009) and Los Angeles (2006-2009) where he was the Partner-in-Charge of that office, and in 2009, returned home to the Chicago office. Prior to joining the firm, James held a senior position with another prominent law firm in Chicago.
