JAMES A. HUIZINGA serves as a co-head of Sidley Austin’s Consumer Class Action (Financial Services) practice area. He is active in financial services litigation as well as enforcement actions and investigations by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, state Attorneys General and other government agencies. 

For decades, Mr. Huizinga has provided litigation and pre-litigation advice relating to the Truth in Lending Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act, false advertising, fair lending, unfair and deceptive trade practices, federal preemption of state consumer protection laws, and debt collection practices.

Mr. Huizinga also advises financial services clients on a wide variety of regulatory, transactional and litigation matters, with special emphasis on retail banking. He works regularly with banks, savings associations, mortgage bankers, finance companies and others on issues related to residential mortgage and credit card programs, multi-state financial services initiatives and other credit, deposit and insurance businesses.

From 2009 through 2013, Mr. Huizinga was named a Leading Lawyer by Chambers USA in its Consumer Financial Services Regulation section. Chambers described Mr. Huizinga in 2013 as a “consumer finance compliance and litigation expert” who “provides ‘an extraordinary synthesis of the law and the facts.’”

Mr. Huizinga is a contributing author to The Law of Truth in Lending (ABA) and The Law of Electronic Fund Transfers (Warren, Gorham & Lamont). He also has testified before Congress on Truth in Lending Act reform.

Mr. Huizinga earned a B.A., cum laude, in mathematics from Occidental College in 1978 and a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, in 1981. He was an editor of the Hastings Law Journal, a member of the Order of Coif and Thurston Society, and recipient of the Milton D. Green Citation. He served as an extern to Associate Justice William P. Clark, Jr. of the California Supreme Court.
