Judge Young B. Kim is a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Illinois.  Judge Kim began his legal career as an Assistant Cook County Public Defender after graduating from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 1991.  He then served as a judicial clerk for U.S. District Judge Charles R. Norgle of the Northern District of Illinois.  In 1995, Judge Kim joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago where he litigated both civil and criminal cases.  During his seven years as a federal prosecutor, Judge Kim focused on investigating and prosecuting healthcare fraud cases.  In 2001, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission appointed Judge Kim to serve as an Administrative Judge.  Judge Kim has been a Magistrate Judge since 2010 when the Northern District of Illinois appointed Judge Kim to the federal bench.

Judge Kim was a founding member, in 1993, of the Chicago Chapter of the Korean American Bar Association and was a co-founder, in 2000, of the monthly Pro Bono Legal Clinic run by KABA and Korean American Community Services.  He currently serves on the board of KABA and is an active member of the Federal Bar Association.  Judge Kim regularly speaks to and conducts training sessions for various bar associations, government agencies, law school groups, and community organizations, and also serves as a mentor to many law students and young lawyers.
