Judge Coleman was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois by President Barack Obama and began her service on September 7, 2010.

Prior to her federal court appointment, Judge Coleman was a justice on the Illinois Appellate Court, First District, having been elected in 2008.  From 1996 until 2008 she was elected to serve as a circuit court judge in Cook County.  She served nearly 10 years as a jury trial judge in the law division.  During her tenure on the circuit court, the Illinois Supreme Court assigned Judge Coleman to the Civil Jury Instructions Committee. For 10 years she served as an instructor on judicial ethics during the training of new judges in Cook County and throughout the state.  She regularly taught at judicial seminars on topics including jury trial management, civil motion practice and technology in the courtroom.  Judge Coleman is often a panelist at area law schools and bar association programs on various topics.

During her pre-judicial career, she practiced exclusively in the public sector as an Assistant State's Attorney, Deputy State's Attorney and an Assistant U.S. Attorney. Judge Coleman was certified as a National Institute of Trial Advocacy instructor.   She frequently participates in law school moot court programs.  Judge Coleman received her juris doctorate degree from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis.
