HONORABLE SARAH S. VANCE

 The Honorable Sarah S. Vance is the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana in New Orleans.  Before joining the bench in 1994, Judge Vance was a partner in the New Orleans firm of Stone, Pigman, Walther, Wittmann & Hutchinson, where her practice focused on antitrust and commercial litigation.

 A frequent writer and lecturer on evidence, complex litigation and antitrust law, Judge Vance is the author of Introduction to Symposium on Multidistrict Litigation, 82 Tul. L. Rev.  6 (2008); A Primer on the Class Action Fairness Act of 2005, 80 Tul. L. Rev. 5 (June 2006); Judicial Application of Article 81 (3): Are the Fears Justified?, European Competition Law Annual 2000, Claus Dieter Ehlermann and Isabela Atanasiu, eds., Hart Publishing (2001); The Role of Judicial Precedent in U.S. Competition Law Enforcement (OECD 1997); and Immunity for State-Sanctioned Provider Collaboration After TICOR, 62 Antitrust Law Journal 409 (1994).  She was also a contributor to the ABA Antitrust Section's Trial Evidence Handbook. In addition, Judge Vance authored Justice After Disaster - What Hurricane Katrina Did to the Justice System in New Orleans, 51 How. L. J. 3 (Spring 2008).

Judge Vance recently served on the Board of Directors of the Federal Judicial Center and chaired the Center's Committee on Judicial Education. She has also lectured in various judicial education programs. Judge Vance is a member of the American Law Institute, and she served as an adviser on the ALI's project on International Jurisdiction and Judgments. She has also served on the Bankruptcy Administration Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States. Judge Vance was a member of the Council of the American Bar Association Antitrust Law Section and is a member of the American Bar Association sections on Antitrust Law and Litigation.  She serves on the board of the New Orleans Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.  Judge Vance is also a professor on the adjunct faculty of Tulane University School of Law, a member of the Tulane Law School Advisory Board, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Tulane Law Review.  

 Judge Vance is a 1978 graduate of Tulane University School of Law, where she was first in her class, managing editor of the Law Review, and a member of the Order of the Coif. She earned her bachelor's degree from Louisiana State University, where she was also first in her class.
