Hon. Sarah Burr (Ret.)

Immigration Judge

Judge Burr was appointed as an Immigration Judge in New York by Attorney General Janet Reno in 1994. In 2006, Judge Burr was appointed Assistant Chief Immigration Judge in charge of the New York, Fishkill, Ulster, Bedford Hills and Varick Street immigration courts. She returned to the bench full time in 2011, and has since retired. She is on the Board of Directors of the Immigrant Justice Corps, and is active in the Katzmann Study Group. She has also served as a referee for the Disciplinary Committee of the Appellate Division, First Department. Finally, she is a member of the New York City Bar Association's Immigration and Nationality Committee.

Prior to her judgeship, Judge Burr worked as a staff attorney in the Criminal Defense Division of the Legal Aid Society in their trial and appeals bureaus. She was also a supervising attorney in their immigration unit. Judge Burr served as a law clerk for U.S. Magistrate Judge John Caden, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York.
