Rosalyn Richter is an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department, and was appointed to that position in March 2009.  Justice Richter’s state court judicial career began in 1990 when she was appointed to the NYC Criminal Court.  During her tenure in Criminal Court, she served in Manhattan, the Midtown Community Court, and was Supervising Judge of Bronx Criminal Court.  In 2002, she was elected to the Supreme Court in New York County, where she presided over a general IAS part, a guardianship caseload, and a matrimonial part until her appointment to the appellate court.

Justice Richter is active in numerous bar and professional associations, and currently co-chairs the Committee to Enhance Diversity in the Profession of the NYC Bar Association.  She is a member of the NY Permanent Judicial Commission on Justice for Children, and the Chief Judge’s Advisory Committee on the Commercial Division.  She helped create and chaired for over a decade OCA’s Advisory Committee on the Americans with Disabilities Act.  She recently completed a six-year term as a member of the board of directors of SAGE USA, a national organization that addresses aging issues in the LGBT community.  For several years, in partnership with PENCIL, a non-profit, she has worked with students at the MLK High School for Law, Advocacy and Community Justice.

Prior to her appointment to the state court bench, she was Executive Director of Lambda Legal and its first paid staff attorney, a supervisor in the Appeals Bureau of the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, and an Administrative Law Judge for the NYC Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings.  She is a graduate of Barnard College and Brooklyn Law School.
