Judge Roanne L. Mann was appointed United States Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of New York and entered on duty on March 2, 1994. She graduated magna cum laude from Yale College in 1972 and received her Juris Doctor degree in 1975 from Stanford Law School, where she was Associate Managing Editor of the Stanford Law Review.

Judge Mann joined the Appeals Bureau of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in 1975 and then served as a law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Thereafter, from 1977 to 1978, she was Special Assistant to the Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Judge Mann spent from 1978 to 1986 at the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, where she served as Chief of the Appeals Unit, Senior Litigation Counsel, and Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division. In 1986, she joined the Manhattan firm of Stein, Zauderer, Ellenhorn, Frischer & Sharp, where she was a partner from 1988 to 1994. She served for several years as a member of the Criminal Justice Act panel in the Southern District of New York, and took part in various bar association activities, including serving on the Board of Directors of the New York Council of Defense Lawyers and chairing that organization’s Federal Rules Committee, and serving as a member of the Criminal Law Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.

She also served on the Board of the Federal Bar Council.
