Justice Peter H. Moulton is an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department. Prior tojoining the First Department, from March 2015 to June 2017 he served as the Administrative Judge for Civil Matters of the First Judicial Department and as Coordinating Judge for the New York City Asbestos Litigation. From November 2010 to January 2014 Justice Moulton was Supervising Judge of the Civil Court in New York County. He began his judicial service in Civil Court in 2004.

Before taking the bench Justice Moulton served for eight years as principal law clerk to Justice Leland DeGrasse in Supreme Court, New York County. He worked as a litigator for the Afiirrnative Litigation Division of New York City's Corporation Counsel from 1988 to 1995. In that capacity he represented the City as a plaintiff in a variety of civil rights, commercial, and intra­ governmental lawsuits. In his first job as a lawyer he served as Law Clerk to U.S. District Judge Charles E. Stewart, Jr., in the Southern District of New York, in 1986-8.

His pro bono activities prior to becoming ajudge included representing victims of domestic violence under the aegis of Sanctuary For Families. He also served on Sanctuary's Legal Advisory Council. He provided assistance to women incarcerated at the Bayview Correctional Facility via the Incarcerated Women's Law Project.

Justice Moulton has trained new judges on an array of topics, including Judicial Discipline, Mediation, No Fault Insurance, Motion Practice in Civil Court, and Small Claims Court. In 2013, while Supervising Judge of Civil Court, Justice Moulton in partnership with the Judicial Institute helped organize and present a three part program for judges, court personnel and practitioners entitled "Transgender Litigants in the Court System: Providing Equal Access and Impartial Justice."

Justice Moulton received his B.A. from Stanford University in International Relations and his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law.
