Hon. Geraldine Soat Brown

Prior to her appointment as a United States Magistrate Judge in 2000, Geraldine Soat Brown practiced law in Chicago for 25 years, concentrating her practice in the area of commercial and construction litigation and alternative dispute resolution. She  represented clients in the state and federal courts and in arbitrations and mediations. In her current position, Judge Brown conducts over 100 settlement conferences a year. 
 Judge Brown served for many years as an arbitrator and mediator of commercial and construction disputes for the American Arbitration Association and as an arbitrator for the Circuit Court of Cook County. She served as a mediator for the Center for Conflict Resolution from 1992 until her appointment to the bench, mediating court-referred civil and criminal misdemeanor cases, and employment discrimination cases at the Illinois Department of Human Rights. She has written and lectured  on alternative dispute resolution, and for three years was an Adjunct Professor of Law at Chicago-Kent Law School, teaching courses on negotiation, mediation and arbitration.  By appointment of the Illinois Supreme Court, she served as a member of the Illinois Supreme Court Alternative Dispute Resolution Coordinating Committee and as an expert advisor to the Illinois Judicial Conference Alternative Dispute Resolution Coordinating Committee.  She chaired the Chicago Bar Association's Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee in 1999-2000. 

She is a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School.
