Lecture Topics [Total time: 01:02:48]

Understanding financial statements and their relevance in various litigations is becoming increasingly important in the aftermath of the financial crisis. It is imperative that attorneys develop a working understanding and analytical framework of accounting to strengthen their background. This one hour course is designed to give attorneys an overview of accounting standards, their relevance, and areas of the financial statements that are subject to manipulation and/or fraud.  By using three real case studies the instructors are able to showcase three main areas of the financial statements that are susceptible to fraud and red flags.

Ann Gittleman and Jenna O’Brien from Duff & Phelps, LLC discuss:

  • Major types of financial statement fraud, using real-life cases to illustrate the schemes
  • The underlying accounting principles that are violated when fraud is perpetrated
  • Red flags, and other techniques useful in detecting financial statement fraud schemes
  • How to read a financial statement
