Heather Meeker specializes in intellectual property transactions for technology clients.  Her clients cover a range of industries including software, communications, educational testing, computer equipment and medical devices.  She has extensive experience in open source licensing strategies, and in intellectual property matters related to mergers and acquisitions.

Heather is nationally and internationally recognized for her leadership in the field of intellectual property licensing, with Chambers USA, the Legal 500, Best Lawyers in America, and SuperLawyers naming her among the industry’s top lawyers in multiple years. The Daily Journal named Heather to its list of “Top 100 Women Lawyers in California” in 2013, and has named her twice to its list of “25 Top IP Portfolio Managers (Licensing) In California.” Managing IP Magazine’s World IP Handbook and Survey’s named her to its “IP Stars - Top 250 Women in IP” list in 2013. And in 2012, Best Lawyers identified her as its “San Francisco Information Technology Law Lawyer of the Year.”

Ms. Meeker served as an adjunct professor of law at Hastings College of the Law and the U.C. Berkeley School of Law, teaching seminars on technology licensing. Ms. Meeker also served as counsel for the Mozilla Foundation, Open Compute Project Foundation, and other open source organizations.

Ms. Meeker attended Yale College (B.A., Economics, 1979) and Boalt Hall School of Law (J.D., 1994), where she served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Berkeley Technology Law Review in 1993-94.

After graduating from Yale, Ms. Meeker spent twelve years splitting her career between computer engineering and music. Her computer engineering work involved various applications  -- accounting systems to on-line educational testing -- and involved a variety of languages and platforms. Ms. Meeker is conversant in procedural languages such as FORTRAN, BASIC, C and assembler, and in object oriented languages such as C++ and Java.

Prior to law school, Ms. Meeker attended the Grove School of Music, graduating with a certificate in drums and percussion, was a general partner in South Bay Sound rehearsal studios in Gardena, California, and worked at Capitol Records, Inc. in Hollywood as a paralegal assistant to the Vice President and Associate General Counsel.  She worked for EDS/Compusource and Metrocomp, Inc. as programmer/analyst, and for SOI Institute as Data Processing Manager.

Ms. Meeker is the author of two widely used books on technology licensing: The Open Source Alternative, John Wiley & Sons, 2008; and Technology Licensing: A Practitioner’s Guide, ABA, 2010.
