George Woods, Jr., MD, is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a member of the American Psychological Association, the American Association for Intellectual and Developmental Disability, the International Neuropsychological Society, and the American Neuropsychiatric Association. He is also immediate Past President of the International Academy of Law and Mental Health.

Dr. Woods is Vice-Chairperson of the Challenging Behaviors Special Interest Research Group for the International Association for the Specialized Study of Intellectual and Developmental Disorders and is the Associate Editor of the Journal of Policy and Practice for IASSIDD.

Dr. Woods is Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry, Morehouse School of Medicine. He is currently taking a sabbatical from Morehouse during his Presidency. He is also a Lecturer at Boalt Hall, the University of California-Berkeley School of Law, where he teaches a course on Law and Mental Health. He has taught previously at California State University, Sacramento; the University of Washington, Bothell Campus, and the University of California, Davis.

Dr. Woods has written on the assessment of neurodevelopmental disorders in forensic clients, cultural aspects of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Ethnopsychopharmacology, and awareness as a hallmark of Intellectual Disability and cognitive dysfunction. He has also written on disaster trauma, neuroimaging, and the impact of culture on educational attainment.

Dr. Woods has consulted with Seattle’s Vulcan Industries on educational development. He has consulted with Yahoo! Corporation on governance issues and Microsoft Corporation on the use of psychological testing in employment diversity. He has also worked with nonprofit corporations, including Senegal’s Tostan nongovernmental organization, to develop effective governance practices. Dr. Woods is currently Clinical Director of Research for Forefront Behavioral Telecare, one of the country’s leading providers of telepsychiatry for rural nursing facilities.

Dr. Woods’ clinical practice, based in the Bay Area, is focused on the treatment of psychiatric manifestations of brain impairment. He has worked with patients in Pakistan, Italy, Japan, Uganda, Zanzibar, Senegal, Malawi, and Tanzania on comorbid psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. He also has a forensic practice focused on the assessment of individuals suffering from neurodevelopmental and other cognitive disorders. Dr. Woods has taught Brain Development for Critical Incident Training for the San Francisco Police Department.

He is a Partner in JohnsonFreedmanWoods Education, an educational consulting firm that created Where Mental Health Meets the Law, a well-respected webinar presented by WestLegalEducation, the legal education arm of Thomson Reuters Publishing. For the last 5 years, JohnsonFreedmanWoods Education has provided cutting edge medicolegal education for attorneys.

Dr. Woods was appointed in 2015 as Medical and Neuroscience Advisor to Defend Your Head (DYH) Corporation. Defend Your Head is dedicated to providing safer helmet technologies for sports, military and industrial applications worldwide. Dr. Woods is also a Partner in GradeLLC, a company currently working with the Evansville, Indiana Unified School District to develop neurocognitive assessment tools for educational institutions.

Dr. Woods, along with Wendy Hanson, M.Ed., CPPC and Steven Kerkstra, CPA, founded The Science Advisors, Inc. in 2015. The organization provides guidance on developing effective medical advisory groups, reviewing science based products and businesses to create businesses with the necessary research and financial foundation to be successful.
