George W. Coombe

George W. Coombe, Jr., a Harvard Law School graduate, has participated actively in the creation and application of dispute resolution alternatives to litigation, with particular emphasis upon international commercial arbitration, and continues to chair tribunals addressing transnational commercial disputes. He has been engaged in both the research and teaching of international dispute resolution over an extended period, at Stanford Law School and Hastings College of the Law, and played a prominent role, as Executive Vice President and General Counsel of BankAmerica Corporation, in the introduction and expansion of arbitration in the resolution of disputes involving financial institutions.

A former Assistant General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of General Motors Corporation, Mr. Coombe has manifested particular interest in disputes pertaining to the governance of private corporations and has presented programs reviewing developments in that regard with members of the Japan Federation of Economic Organizations (Keidanren) in Tokyo; the International Development Law Institute in Rome; and the Vietnam Ministry of Justice in Hanoi. A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London, he is a former Director of the American Arbitration Association, serving as Co-Chair of its Asia/Pacific Center for the Resolution of International Business Disputes, and was Chairman of the Corporation, Banking and Business Law Section of the American Bar Association.

Mr. Coombe is a member of the panel of arbitrators of several international arbitral institutions and centers, including those of the American Arbitration Association; the International Chamber of Commerce, Paris; the London Court of International Arbitration; and the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission; and arbitration centers in Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Vancouver.
