I grew up in Casper, Wyoming.  I graduated with honors from Yale University in 1973, earning a double degree in Political Science and Sociology.

I loved Yale, but wanted to live and work in Wyoming, completing law school at the University of Wyom ing in 1976. I started as a public defender in Casper and moved to Jackson in 1979.  I was a partner in the Spence Law firm for nearly 25 years.

Along the way, I met Dona and we married in 1979. We've had more than our share of joys and tribulations in 33+ years of marriage.

I've spent most of my adult years trying to be a decent father, husband, and lawyer.

My latest passion was service as Board Chair for the Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies.  We provide food assistance for the entire State of Wyoming.

I've served on several civic and community boards, including the Jackson Hole Alliance for Responsible Planning, the Teton Science School, the Wyoming Trial Lawyers Association, and the Casper Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps.  I worked hard many years ago to get a community recreation center built in Jackson.  We have a family foundation which funds programs pairing troubled teens with dogs and other youth  activities.

I am infinitely fascinated with scientific and lay publications exploring how and why people think the way they do.

I've had cases from Florida to Pennsylvania to Washington and California and most points in between.  I've represented  injured people and folks charged with crimes for over 35 years.  My cases give me vicarious experiences in everything from how to run an oil rig to complex scientific and medical problems.
