Galen Sherwin is a senior staff attorney at the Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union, where she where she works primarily on equality for women and girls in education and employment, with a focus on sex stereotypes and discrimination on the basis of pregnancy and lactation.  She joined the ACLU after four years with the New York Civil Liberties Union, where she was Director of the Reproductive Rights Project.  Prior to joining the ACLU family, Galen was a Blackmun Fellow in the Domestic Legal Program of the Center for Reproductive Rights, where she litigated cases around the country focusing on minors’ rights to reproductive health care and abortion.  She began her career prior to law school as a political organizer and a legislative aide to a State Senator, and then went on to serve as President of the New York City Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) as well as on the national board of NOW.  Galen is a 1994 graduate of Yale University, where she received the Steere Prize in Women’s Studies, a 2003 graduate of Columbia Law School, where she received the Rosenman Prize for academic excellence in public law, and a former law clerk to the Honorable Gerard E. Lynch, who was then in the Southern District of New York.
